DJ Riggs & Berry Bachen

My mom did so well making sure my childhood hairdos were cute cute cute.

But my days of innocence ended the summer before middle school. I had seen the movie “Ghost”, and thought Demi Moore’s hair was so cool. When Aunt Beverly, the hairdresser, gave herself a fresh “pixie cut”, I begged for her to do the same for me.

What I received instead was a boy cut, much like my brother’s, featured here, but with a slight mullet.

I looked so much like a boy that a group of teenagers at the mall laughed at me for coming out of the girl’s bathroom, thinking I had made a mistake.

I was about to enter 6th grade like this. My mom, always quick on her feet, knew this laughter was just a taste of the trauma I was about to experience.

There was only one option:

A home perm.

But just on top.

(I may have burned the “after” pics.)

Fast forward through a couple decades of living paralyzed with fear when anyone would approach with scissors.

Until, thankfully…

… In 2017, I was introduced to DJ Riggs and Berry Bachen.

When you work with artists, you get art.

Please enjoy this tribute.
